The SMILES committee teamed up with Miles Perret Cancer Services again this year for the annual Back-to-School project. Each year, this committee purchases and organizes backpacks filled with school supplies for children who are fighting cancer or have a family member with cancer.
This year, more than 80 children turned in school supply lists in June and July and SMILES jumped into action to fill the families’ needs.
“Our hope is to take some of the weight and stress off of the many families and children affected by cancer,” said Elizabeth Van Bebber, SMILES Committee chair.
Committee Members met at the Miles Perret Cancer Service and assembled an astounding 95 backpacks filled with school supplies for 47 families this year.
This month, Miles Perret will distribute the backpacks just in time for the upcoming school year.
SMILES is already busy planning their monthly activities for SMILES families. In the coming months, they plan to host outings to Painting with a Twist, Kart Ranch, the movie theater, and a UL sporting event!
